The rest they let go. Research note: In researching the information that spirit gave, reference is made to the Forest Brothers, who were Lithuanian Freedom Fighters, also called partisans. They hid in the dense forests of Lithuania, their numbers growing to the thousands, and asked for the forest god to protect them during a many years' long fight for independence - from the Soviet Union, from the Nazis and Fascists. Caught between the agressive expansionism of World War II Nazis and Cold War sovietization, tens of thousands of Lithuanians were deported, tortured or sent to death camps in Siberia. Eventually the freedom fighters fought not only in Lithuania, but also in Poland, Croatia, Russian Georgia, and other regions. Parliament in Lithuania changed hands as the Soviet Union claimed control. Whole families were caught up in the resistance and children and women fought and died helping the fighters. Lithuanians finally received their independence in 1990-91.Lithuania was known as the "hidden war."
