Must be about fifty years after the conquest of Poland. My re-guard (regard?) is over. Counted to be about right. A right back turn prevails upon us. We shook. Over we went. Goodnight!" Asha: Who did it to you? Spirit: "Mines. Left behind." Asha: Who are you? Spirit: "The guard. Poland...Quan de Loop (sp?) I was...holding up things a bit. I rested. Too long. My boots - laces..." (Vision: Man sitting on the side of road fixing brown-colored boots.) Asha: What was your name? Spirit: Earnest (Ernst?) Note: In the next section, one spirit takes over, directing the other spirits on how to continue the story. Spirit: "At the 21st we will march. Gunnery Sergeant? Begin. I give orders here. Developments afoot. Danforth, begin telling them about the perils. Donnelly, you give things evenly, you see. Both sides. Begin now. Forest...lawn.....Michael!" Spirit-Michael: "I was one. I see them coming. The Krauts. He, Danforth, noticed them, too. He cried out, 'Notice - over here yonder. Look.' Infantry came. They were never on time! Lonely." Spirit-Harris: "Toys. They were like brutes with toys, I guess. We never seen them coming till the raid. Berlin...Nagasaki...coast to coast - too much. How to begin! We have a war - two sides, no three really. Then Denmark gets into it, I think. All over, it's a mess. I was quarantined a bit because I shook - sick. Terminal. Milford! Brennan!" Spirits-Milford and Brennan: "We were just looking to see who's coming - out and about. Forest begins to tell us about his youth. 'Dahlings.'" Asha: What group are you? Spirits-Milford and Brennan: "41st. Queen of Scotland Boys. All night we've been up, most of us. We begin by telling others about our friends up north. Geysers aplenty, all right. But, you see, he had other friends. A platoon of them. Hidden under the brush somewhere, I guess. I never seen them. They come out at us - all sides it seemed, all right. I never get up again. Felt like - I think it was - a rock hit my head - right side. Gun fell. Bloody mess! Eleven of us fell. We are beaten. Destroyed this time. Never before though." Spirit- Gordon (Gerden?): "I will never be myself again. I wanted to go home to her - my wife, M. She's died by now, of course. Gordon (Gerden?) Remorse. I feel still - remorse. For not caring enough for her to go away sooner." Asha: Desert? Spirit-Gorden (Gerden?): "Yes. Leave. I should have. Period. There. I've said it and I feel better. We all could, you know - just leave. Any time, any place, any day. I know that now. I didn't then. I had the chance and I didn't take it. We all had the chance once. I might still be alive if I had." Another spirit: "Gerty, what do you have to say?" Spirit-Gerty: "I once read you can't go back twice. I never tried but think I would if I can. You never know, do you, till you try. Phoenix. That's where I'd live. Growing up as a boy I heard a lot about it from my uncle. He grew up there. I was at Cologne when they got hit. Staff. We heard the rifles go off ahead of us and we ran inside to get away from the action a bit. Didn't want to get hurt yet! So we hid a bit. Dining. It opened up a bit. We went. Guy threw down his gun at me and marched on it!" Spirit-Schreckengost(sp?) "Tired. Had to go to a meeting tonight. Be here later Begin to tire early these Fall evenings. We established a hut there for little reason. A mighty earthquake struck the night before we left. Heard about it on the news. Venduzzi? Brendisi??" Asha: Would you like to add anything? Spirit: "After the switch, the turnaround, we begin again - about a hundred years." Asha: Earth? Spirit? "Maybe."
