THE INDIES...AMERICA?
Early Colonists

Spirits of the departed wanted to share their true story. In this conversation, we hear from a man who, having come to a new continent, or island, had to make the best of the situation. His remains can still be found today... if you know where to look for them. Asha's comments or questions alternate with that of spirit.

Asha:
Where?

Spirit:
Roanoke

Asha:
When?

Spirit:
Storm

Asha:
The missing colonists?

Spirit:
Very same.

Asha:
How to find your remains?

Spirit:
Buried. Under fig tree branches. 15 feet, left. House torn down long ago.

Asha:
You survived the storm?

Spirit:
Yes, barely.

Asha:
And then?

Spirit:
We brooked a station for the Wenby (Whimby, Whemby, Winby, Owenby, Whenbee, Wenbee??). We found a light, crooked it.

Asha:
And...

Spirit:
Carnal.

Asha:
OK...how many of you?

Spirit:
We bring many with us but we swing left, hard turn, too much. Left rigging failed. Harness broke, left loose - swung over - hit us - killed many of us. I swum away. An arm broke...

Asha:
And, then?

Spirit:
A crooked mile we walked, inward to varying lengths and degrees.  We found variance among us. Some negroes were present. We pressed them into service for us all. We gave them supplies. Soup.  A lovely sunset. We gave them bread, too. Forest brings great delight. Many deer; some hunting. We killed many that year. If you could bring yourself to understand the beginning, it makes the endings harder to fathom.  We made break and then studied the tempos. We gave it a day, stranded. We had two boys with us (white) and an animal (horse?). Caroline came over with her men behind her. She gave us presents to share among us. She cared very deeply and cried when we were gone. We had to march.

Asha:
What year was it?

Spirit:
By Heavenly God, I don't know any more. The Christening was Spring - I remember - and there were many toasts to our pleasure. He came out all athwarts...

Asha:
The baby?

Spirit:
Yes. We christened him Henry I, of III. We wanted a big family, but alas, we had only two big boys, a one with a leg injury. The storm came when we were fifteen, she and I. The ship was a titan, a class. She came about under strong stern conditions.

Asha:
From where?

Spirit:
Hyannis (or Highness?)

Asha:
Was this before or after the American colonies were formed?

Spirit:
We make a bridge to it twice. We were of a distinction yellow. (isolated ship-illness?)Can it be said we tried twice to gain allegiance of a brand, but after you see what developed...We made sorghum and other sweets. We delivered hardy ales.

Asha:
What was your nationality?

Spirit:
British.

Asha:
Who was your employer?

Spirit:
We didn't have one. Only a penny, a yarn.

Asha:
Were you working as a sailor on board the ship?

Spirit:
Yes, twice; once below decks, once above - the fatal time for both of us. She swam ashore.

Asha:
What was the location of your house and supplies?

Spirit:
Rigging failed. Lost everything. Went down over north port. In the Indies, I think. We received guidance in many things aboard ship three (months?). Gordy(sp) was a friend. We swam together. He made bread and pumpkin soup. We lived together three years. He made plenty. After the locks broke, we swam ashore many times to get the others in. The stern was rough - broke...Eliza was hardy. She knew what to do about everything on hand. Her father knew the service of others. Her father knew what to do with a gun. Antioch broke... We were many times hit by fog, runners. Caroline hurt her arm.

Asha:
Did you name your town?

Spirit:
Jordan once. Then Christchurch
(or Christchild). Bedford (or Belford?) nearby now. Cherokee legends exist about us.

Asha:
Were Indians friendly?

Spirit:
We got on all right.

Asha:
Why did you say the end was hard to fathom?

Spirit:
We came to Spring hardy and then the dam broke, creeks rise, and elders (trees) are flattened. Oakwood, too. We eliminate everything we don't need. After that event, I am broken. I bruise easily (56?). I am hurt, defiled, and destroyed. Easily made, hard broken. We gave a choice to be beaten once, not twice. We give up. Go downstream with another couple of people to a hardy place in the south of us. Traveled by land both ways twice. Landed a-fiord to the end. Captain was acquitted. He died in good memory of his comrades. Liver failure. Ralph was in England.

Asha:
The Wenby...describe it.

Spirit:
With sails. Broad stem (stern?). Underwent rigorous changes afoot when she sailed to Bingham once.

Asha:
Explain yellow.

Spirit:
A color we wore when we were bringing..

Part II:

Asha:
From Hyannis to...

Spirit:
Newport (Newport News?)

Asha:
Anything else?

Spirit:
We bring with us a small amount of diamonds, tea rings and assorted accoutrements, a brass brassier, some stove parts, held below in the aft deck. A quantity of frission (sp?).
Stoneware. Two quarts ale. Two daggers. A divine blessing or two and one curse between us. Sebastian was a church man. He stumbled a bit. Fell once or twice. We loved him. He gave us his last bit of quince. Below decks it was topsy-turvy... mixture of species.

Asha:
What was the name of the captain?

Spirit:
Brannigan (Brennigan, Brennan?)
